Pretoria - Residents of Spoorview in Ga-Rankuwa will stop service
delivery protests following their meeting with Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso
Ramokgopa on Wednesday.
"We will definitely not continue with the
protest, although the struggle will continue for freedom," chairperson
of the residents’ committee Ruddy Maseko told News24.Residents were satisfied with Ramokgopa’s commitment to find solutions to their problems, but would wait to see if any action was taken.
“Being happy would be converted to being content or satisfied should our demands be finally met by watching the tar road construction happen before our very own eyes," he said.
Last Tuesday, residents protested against high municipal rates and for service delivery. They said the city did not recognise their area and that they had received communication to this effect.
They vowed not to vote in the August 3 local government elections if Ramokgopa or President Jacob Zuma did not address them.
Maseko said Ramokgopa promised to find a budget to tar roads in the area. They were told that technicians were separating street lights from household connections in Spoorview extensions 1 and 2 as the areas now fell under Eskom and no longer the old Bophuthatswana Electric Corporation.
He said Ramokgopa promised to send engineers to inspect their gravel roads, which were not of the same standard as other parts of Ga-Rankuwa, and to address residents within seven days.
Mayoral spokesperson Blessing Manale said the meeting was successful and promises were made.
"Unfortunately not all the demands can be met in the current financial year. We have been honest with them and they are fairly happy. I don't think there will be any protests unless there is a political party involved," he said.
